Ancient Egypt Essay Egypt is a country that is situated within the North Africa mainly. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Sudan to the south, Israel and Gaza strip to the northeast and Libya to the west and red Sea to the east. It is one among the most populous countries in Africa and the Middle East. The best monuments in Egypt are the Giza pyramid complex and it Great Sphinx were built by the ancient civilization of Egypt. The best tourism spot in Egypt is the Red Sea Riviera. When talking about the economy, it has one among the most diversified in the Middle East. To have a better understanding of Egypt, we shall go into the history of Egypt. Around 3150 BC, a unified kingdom was formed by King Menes that led to a series of empire that ruled Egypt for about the next three millennia. The Egyptian culture was flourished during this period and it remained distinct in all aspects like religion, arts, customs and language. The first two dynasties constituted the Old kingdom and they have constructed most of the pyramids in Egypt. The daily life in Egypt revolved around the river Nile and due to the yearly flooding, it several rulers. There was the Roman and Ptolemaic Egypt and the last ruler of that era were enriched the land and thus made it very fertile for cultivation and this bought good wealth to the land. The heights of prosperity were during the reign of the Pharaoh Amenemhat III. A Pharaoh is considered as the most powerful person who was both a political and religious leader of the Egyptian people. Before being a republic, Egypt was ruled by the Cleopatra VII. Then there was the Arab and Ottoman Egypt where Egypt was conquered by the Arabs and Muslims and they ruled for another six centuries in Egypt bringing Muslim religion in the country. In 1517, the Ottoman Turks conquered Egypt which leads a major devastation of the country. With the French invasion by the Napoleon and later Commander of the Albanian regiment, Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman reign came to an end and it led to the British rule. By 1953, the Egyptian Republic was declared with General Muhammad Naguib being the first President. Later by the year 2011, revolutions took place in Egypt and the Mubarak government was stepped down and the first parliamentary elections were conducted. The economy of Egypt mainly depends on agriculture, petroleum exports, media, tourism, and exports of natural gas. Egypt has developed an energy market based on oil, coal, hydro power and natural gas. The FDI (Foreign Direct Investments) have risen considerably in Egypt over the last few years. When being in Egypt, there are tourist locations that should never be missed. A few places are listed here: In Cairo ââ¬â Pyramids of Giza, Pyramids of Sakkara, Ancient Memphis, The Egyptian Museum, The hanging Church, Santa Barbara are a few to name here. In Luxor ââ¬â Luxor temple, Valley of the Kings, Ramses III, are a few to mention. At the Red Sea Coast ââ¬â Red Sea Coast, Marsa Alam, Monastry of St.Paul, are a few to be mentioned. The pyramids are the well known trade marks in Egypt. The culture allowed them to burry bodies of their pharaohs in great tombs called as pyramids and Egypt is ââ¬ËThe Countryââ¬â¢ that has great number of Pyramids which is great to see in this modern era. Egypt celebrates many festivals and carnivals, which is also known as mulid. Ramadan has a great flavour in Egypt and is celebrated with lights and music. An ancient spring festival of Egypt known as the Sham en Nisim hasà been celebrated for more than thousand of years. The culture of Egypt dates back to about six thousand years which is a recorded history. Egypt maintained a striking complex that influenced the later cultures of Middle East, Europe and African Countries. Egypt is also recognized as a cultural trend setter of the Arab-speaking world. A beautiful country with a great civilization and a great place to be visited with its beauty and to be seen and understood in all aspects.

High-Functioning Autism through Rain Man A man and his brother walk down the terminal in an airport. They engage in a heated argument over whether they should board an airplane for Los Angeles. The older brother complains about taking an airplane and fears for his life, telling his brother about the crashes that every airline has had. The younger brother becomes annoyed and tells him that every airline has crashed at one point or another. To this, the older brother exclaims, ââ¬Å"Qantas never crashed.â⬠Upset at his obstinacy and refusing to fly to Australia just to travel to Los Angeles, the younger brother attempts to pull the older. He responds in the only way he knowsââ¬âby screaming. Not wishing to undergo his painful screams, the younger brother stops and reassures his brother that they will drive to Los Angeles instead. This scene may sound weird to neurologically-typical (NT), or ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠, people, but it does demonstrate the coping strategies of people with autism, as exhibited through this scene from Rain Man. Charlie Babbitt, a neurologically typical adult, does not understand how his brother, Raymond Babbitt, who is a high-functioning autistic, functions in his little world that he has created. Manifestations of autism such as this indicate to people how an autistic was seen as ââ¬Å"like a wolfâ⬠(Pollak 258) in older definitions. Recently, though, people are beginning to understand that the problem is organic, or biologically based, as opposed to the psychogenic, or psychologically based, hypothesis of the past. Henry Jamesââ¬â¢s The Turn of the Screw and William Goldingââ¬â¢s Lord of the Flies Essay
Compare the ways in which children are portrayed in Henry Jamesââ¬â¢s The Turn of the Screw and William Goldingââ¬â¢s Lord of the Flies. How convincing do you find each authorââ¬â¢s treatment of evil in relation to his characters? Everyone likes to think of childhood as a symbol of a time of innocence. People tend to look back on their childhood nostalgically, they remember it as carefree and often use the term ââ¬Ëyouth is wasted on the youngââ¬â¢ these feelings have stayed with us for centuries and are incredibly deep rooted. These feelings therefore, create widespread outrage when evil becomes apparent in children or is inflicted upon them, For example the murder of James Bulger by ten year olds and also abuse and corruption of children. Children are thought of as vulnerable, when there vulnerability is taken advantage of, especially by another child a question is asked, is childhood innocence a myth? The Victorians were aware of the religious doctrine of original sin, yet they were shocked that there was the suggestion that the two young children in Henry Jamesââ¬â¢s The Turn of the Screw could be evil. Golding presents children with a strong propensity to evil and disorder. Goldingââ¬â¢s children are a mixture, from saintly Simon to barbaric Jack. The fact that the two writers have different aims to come of their stories should be taken into consideration. Golding has written a fable, whilst his characters are all boys, and are recognisably boys; they all possess different characters that are intended to represent humanity. They are all individuals, Ralph, Piggy, Simon and Jack but each one can be categorised. On the other hand James has written a ghost story, albeit of an unconventional kind. Also, the two children in The Turn of the Screw are never actually shown from a different point of view from that of the governess, we never see Miles and Flora as wholly rounded individuals we donââ¬â¢t gain access into their thoughts and feelings and therefore could interpret them wrongly. They could be the corrupted accomplices of Peter Quint and Miss Jessel, as the governess believes, or they could be the sexually obsessed fantasies in her head. In Goldingââ¬â¢s novel there is not a definite narrator. Golding allows us to know what the boys are thinking and feeling; this is particularly true of Ralph and Simon. When Miles and Flora are first introduced into the novel they are seen through the romantic and idealising vision of the governess and therefore are portrayed to us as ââ¬Ëinnocent and beautiful; they have charm and perfect mannersââ¬â¢ Yes, this is because the governess has a romantic imagination and is overwhelmed by her new responsibilities but it also could be because the childrenââ¬â¢s innocence portrayed in the first chapters of the novel makes their depravity later on seem all the more shocking to the reader as a contrast. When we first meet Goldingââ¬â¢s boys however they are portrayed to us far more realistically, Piggy is an excellent example of this as he is the first most down to earth character we meet, you immediately get an image of piggy and the things he says are never questioned in the readers head to be unrealistic or fake about him. This is because his speech and manners arenââ¬â¢t perfect, which is what you would expect in a child. For me both authors treatment of evil in relation to his characters are convincing. James approaches the question of evil by being deliberately inexplicit. We are never actually informed as to what offence Miles was expelled from school ââ¬ËI said thingsââ¬â¢- Miles. Also, in chapter six the governess feels a ââ¬Ësudden sickness of disgustââ¬â¢ when she learns from Mrs. Grose that Quint was ââ¬Ëtoo freeââ¬â¢ with Miles. Again we donââ¬â¢t learn exactly what this means; it could refer to some sort of sexual abuse. I think this is a convincing and effective way of putting across the evil in the book because the novel seems to gain in power precisely because James refuses to spell things out for the reader. The ghostly apparitions are given a genuinely chilly impact ââ¬Ëhe slowly changed his place, looking at me hard all the while, to the opposite corner of the platformââ¬â¢ through the governessââ¬â¢s reaction the reader is made vividly aware of an atmosphere of evil. For Golding evil is first manifest in the gradual breakdown of order amongst the boys: they neglect things they agreed to do together, such as building shelters; they pick on or shun those who are different, notably piggy and Simon. Roger begins to discover that he enjoys wielding power over others and even inflicting pain; the lure of hunting turns into blood lust; the boys succumb to the fear of the ââ¬ËBeastââ¬â¢ and superstition. Simon the visionary is the only boy with the insight to see that evil is a part of Melanie Parkes human nature. The Beast is not an external creature to be feared, but it is inside each one of them. This evil is an enemy of reason and order and wishes to extinguish them. It results in murder, first of Simon, then of Piggy, and finally the boys intend to hunt and kill Ralph. I also find the evil in children implication convincing in Goldings writing as it implies that evil comes from within and is present in everyone, even children. The build up to children murdering each other in this story is convincing and therefore the evil in them is convincing as nothing on the island apart from a dead corpse was there to trigger the evil that came from only them. Overall the two writers manage to deal with ââ¬Ëevilââ¬â¢ in different but effectively, whilst both stories are of a different genre they both deal with the fact that evil may well be present in children. The children are portrayed differently because evil because apparent them in different ways, in Jamesââ¬â¢s novel through the ghosts and in Goldingââ¬â¢s novel through ââ¬ËThe Beastââ¬â¢ however in both books evil is seen as a force, which consumes and destroys. Miles is destroyed at the end of Jamesââ¬â¢s novel though in ambiguous circumstances. In Goldingââ¬â¢s novel, the entire island is turned from a paradise into a raging inferno.
